La Vie is a true farm-to-table restaurant and shop, that has a slightly weird vibe. The steak was delicious and tender, although there is more to the story…
This photo taken one afternoon when the door was open – it’s mostly shut and makes the place look closed.
We arrived around 7.30pm on a warm summer evening. and the restaurant was empty. We had a reservation, but the staff looked surprised to see us.
On one side of the main dining room is an impressive beef larder.
This is not a place for vegans – La Vie’s Facebok page has ‘Odstup Vegane’ – ‘Get Back Vegan!’.
We decided to eat in the small garden.
We both chose a 300g striploin steak 740 Kč with mixed vegetables 89 Kč per person. The waitress didn’t ask how we wanted our steak cooked – we asked for medium rare and she said that’s how we cook all our steak. If that doesn’t suit you then make sure to mention it.
I’d read stories of how the chef, who on this occasion appeared to be wearing lederhosen, invites guests into the open kitchen and shows them preparation and cooking – we weren’t invited, but then we didn’t ask.
Our food arrived. The vegetables were fresh and perfectly cooked. The steak was tender and delicious, but also sliced before cooking.
Expecting a single piece of meat, we tried to decide why the chef had sliced it. Our conclusion was that the meat was originally intended for carpaccio. Perhaps we were wrong and that’s just how they cook their steaks – we’d need to return to find out. Equally, should we care as the food was delicious?
