The quiet town of Santa Pola lies 20km south of Alicante. The Salt Museum and Bird Sanctuary isn’t a ‘must see’, but it’s free and includes a pleasant walk around a lake.
Hours are only 9am – 2pm.
Salt water has been evaporated here for centuries to make salt. The board walk around the lake is peaceful and there are viewing points and a hide where you can see the birds – the flamingos are the most famous inhabitants.
The Salt Museum is located in an old salt works.
As you’d expect, the museum shows salt extraction processes, both past and present. There is a also a telescope where you can zoom in and watch the flamingos.
If you are staying in Santa Pola, the Salt Museum and Bird Sanctuary is worth wandering around for an hour or so – then you can return to sun, sea, sand and sangria!
