Pierogi are filled dumplings and are practically Poland’s national dish. Stary Młyn in Poznań makes some of the best we’ve tasted.

The restaurant is located within an historic 1880s building – the interior is beautiful.

The staff were all friendly, helpful and also fast – the only  restaurant we visited in Poznań that managed to be fast!

A 0.5l Czech Kozel beer 18 zlotý and appeared with complimentary bread and a type of cottage cheese spread.

On our first visit we had a selection of five large, delicious, baked pierogi with duck, lamb, chicken, spinach and black pudding fillings(49 zlotý) with a mushroom sauce (6.46 zlotý).

On our second visit, we had a selection of nine, smaller, boiled pierogi with chilli beef, duck, chicken, lamb and cod fillings (55 zlotý) and this time we ordered two bowls of mushroom sauce. These were also amazing. If I had to choose one outstanding pierogi, it would be the cod – that comes in a black pastry.

Government taxes of 23% and 8% appear at the bottom of the bill, but these appear to be for information only as the total matches the prices shown on the menu and the bill.

If I lived in Poznań, I’d visit Stary Młyn every week. They make more than just pierogi and I wish I could have gone back a third time to try their potato pancakes.
