Koiné is a lovely Mediterranean/Andalusian, fine-dining, Bistró in the centre of Alicante. Opened in 2022 by chef patron Juan Luis Parra Poza, the restaurant has received great reviews.

Our waiter was friendly, professional and spoke English.

We were each given small round objects containing a hand wipe and water. The idea is that you press down on the top, breaking the seal and allowing the water to moisten the wipe which then expands. However, we found it hard to break the seal and I think the – I’d prefer the original method where the waiter pours warm water from a small teapot on to the miniature napkin.

Artisan sourdough bread with amazing olive oil and la Queseria Calaveruela sheep butter – delicious, but a little steep at €2.95 per person.

A glass of good De Salva Crianza €6. A bottle of water €2.95.

The wild scallop dish (€13) was absolutely delicious.

Iberian pork marinated in koji, potato gnocchi with Payoyo cheese sauce and pesto (€28) was fine-dining at its best.

Sea bass with a yuzu beurre blanc sauce (€23) was beautifully presented and delicious. However, the fish hadn’t been filleted correctly and contained several bones. We’re used to bones, but at this level, they shouldn’t be there.

The waiter apologised for the fish bones, but didn’t offer anything else – waving the bread fee would have been nice.

The bathrooms are upstairs and I discovered a mezzanine floor with additional tables. The restaurant was still quiet at 8pm – the Spanish like to eat much later.

Despite the small mistakes, we really enjoyed our visit to Koiné and would have returned but we also wanted to try Steki, La Taberna del Gourmet, Manero and Bigoli during our visit.
