Steki is a foodie spot in Alicante’s old quarter with good reviews. We weren’t that impressed – there are better dining options at a lower price elsewhere.
Our first issue was when making a reservation. The Steki website states:
Our reservations are subject to a cancellation policy. If you cancel your reservation within 24 hours of your arrival date, you will be charged €40 per person.
I understand that restaurants suffer from no shows, but that is an outrageous cancellation policy. We decided to take our chances and walk in.
The only table ‘available’ was a high table next to the coats and bathroom. Never choose this table – it’s pokey. But we were there for the food and took our seats. This was the view back into the restaurant.
The minimum order is five shared courses – each course costs between €15 and €28, each person receives their own plate. Prices correct as of March 2025.
Olivia, the owner, whose husband Fernando is the chef, tried quite hard to sell us more than five dishes and with accompanying wines, but we insisted on just five plus a €6 glass of house red each. Our punishment was two glasses containing no more than 0.1l each. We subsequently ordered another two glasses and they were a little more generous.
Octopus, broccoli, spinach, Idiazábal cheese 19 €. Nice, but didn’t live up to our expectations.
Emperor, coconut, cucumber, and shrimp aguachile €19. This was delicious.
Feta mousse, smoked sardine, green tomato €15. Really interesting and also tasty – a mousse coated red to resemble a tomato.
The next two courses were:
Duck, zucchini flower, shallots, capers €18
Scallop, eggplant, Kalamata pesto €20
We took the following pictures at the time, but now struggle to identify which dish is which as they weren’t that memorable! If you know, then please reply in the comments.
The five courses were enough, as we both received all of the above. Don’t be persuaded to order more until you’ve completed the mandatory minimum.
Our total bill €123 excluding tip. This would be an acceptable price for a selection of amazing dishes, but these were hit and miss. The severe cancellation policy is another reason to avoid this restaurant.
