The Down Under is an Australian-themed pub/restaurant in the Vinohrady area of Prague. It’s a slightly weird place that has yet to find an identity, but they do make great pies.
You’ll find the entrance close to the Vinohradská tržnice tram stop, just behind the Royal Theatre sign.
And the pub is truly down under, as you’ll discover when you walk down these steps.
Then, turn left into a corridor, that has a sofa and a flat screen tv.
The first room you’ll see has two pool tables – this used to be a children’s play area.
The pub has a half-hearted attempt at an Australian theme. The place is missing something, although that something isn’t TVs for watching sports – there are plenty.
Prices correct as of March 2025.
Beer prices here are very reasonable: 0.5l Gambrinus 10º 59 Kč. 0.4l Guinness draft or 0.44l Guinness 0.0 can 89 Kč. That’s the least expensive Guinness 0.0 in Prague.
There is an amazing selection of pies. The bar has one menu that shows what’s available.
You can also order pies frozen to take away for 135 Kč. Bring your own bag as they didn’t have any and just gave me two frozen pies.
On a previous visit, we had the Pie Tower (70 Kč plus the pie) includes mashed potatoes, pea purée and beef gravy.
It appears that pie towers are an Australian invention. Each part of the dish is good, but the concept doesn’t work and would likely result in locals with torches and pitchforks hunting down the chef if served in the North of England!
Next time, I’ll ask for the mash and mushy peas to be next to the pie.
Cheap beer, good pies, plenty of TVs showing sports – place should be packed, but was empty for the most of the afternoon of Sunday 30th March 2025. There were three staff working, plus someone in the kitchen.
There is something odd about this place, but we’ll give Down Under another try and hope it doesn’t go under.
