Hotel Jama is the ideal base for exploring the breathtaking Postojna Cave—once the day-trippers depart, you’ll have the park all to yourself.
The following video shows an executive suite, dinner buffet, park and breakfast.
The lobby is on the first floor – the ground floor occupied by souvenir shops and restaurants.
Check in was smooth and friendly. We’d booked a suite, but were upgraded to an Executive Suite, which adds a personal gym and shower.
The sofa in the room can be converted into a bed. The door between the sitting room and bedroom can be closed. The suite is ideal for families or couples who like to sleep apart.
There is a curtain that can be used for privacy in the bathroom.
The gym room also includes a shower.
We had three terraces, each with great views of the park.
The hotel offer a 10% discount on park tickets. We took the ‘Full Park Experience’ which includes the main cave, Predjama Castle, Vivarium (which is also a cave) and Expo Cave Karst (which isn’t a cave!). The main cave is the star of the show (review here), the Vivarium is really worth a visit (review here) and the Expo is really interesting if you want to learn more about the cave and its history – they’ve spent a fortune making the Expo a modern museum.
We discovered that the castle was a €20 each-way taxi ride away and that seemed a rip off for a 9km taxi ride – in the summer, there is a shuttle bus provided.
The surrounding park is beautiful and empty once the day-tripper visitors to the cave have left.
If you want to venture further, there are hills to climb and great views.
We booked half board – there isn’t anywhere else nearby to have dinner. The dinner was a good buffet, with plenty of dishes to choose from. A 0.1l glass of Merlot €4. A carafe of tap water was free.
The hot and cold breakfast buffet was good, although no cooked to order items. The biggest let down was the watered-down orange juice. No sparkling wine.
For lunch we tried two restaurants below the hotel. The first Montania was terrible – don’t go there!
The second was Magdalena and they provided a good burger and beer for €15.50.
The train station is too far to walk (2km) with luggage, we took a taxi €10 for the five-minute ride. A first class ticket to Ljubliana was €7.70 and the journey took just one hour.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Jama. It was really worth staying two nights and not having to rush. Those who just arrive for a day-trip are missing out.
See our reviews for the main cave and the vivarium.
