The Ljubljana castle funicular railway is the perfect way to reach the castle while enjoying views of Ljubliana. Opened in 2006, the funicular travels a distance of just 70 metres, but climbs over 40 metres in elevation.

The glass cabin gives passengers a sweeping view of the city’s red-roofed buildings, the Ljubljanica River and the surrounding hills, making the ride a scenic prelude to exploring the medieval castle above.

The lower station is located near the city’s Central Market, just a few minutes’ walk from the three famous bridges. The upper station opens right onto the castle’s courtyard, offering direct access to exhibitions, a viewing tower and a variety of cultural events hosted year-round.

If you want to do more than ride the railway, such as climb the viewing tower, you’ll need to purchase a package ticket. We were quite content to ride the railway, walk around for half and hour and then ride back down again. That cost us €6.00 each return.
