First established in 1947, the Saltburn Miniature Railway provides a 1km/0.6 mile scenic journey through Saltburn Valley Gardens with passenger carriages pulled by one of four locomotives.

We were pulled from Forest Halt to Cat Nab Station by ‘Saltburn 150’, a 4-6-2 Locomotive built in 1975 by Artisair and based on a scale replica of ‘Flying Scotsman’.

Tickets are only available from Cat Nab station – passengers without a return ticket are trusted to purchase a single ticket on arrival.

The line runs from Cat Nab station for 1km/0.6 mile along the wooded valley beside Skelton Beck. It passes through grassland, where there are picnic areas and a variety of play areas, before arriving at Forest Halt station. You can take a short walk over the bridge taking you to the Italian Gardens and Victorian Tea Rooms, or, remain on the train for the return journey.

The service starts on Good Friday and finishes on the last weekend in September. Signs are placed at both Cat Nab and Forest Halt stations which state “Trains Running Today”. If these signs are not out then you can assume that the days programme has been delayed or cancelled. This is mainly due to poor track conditions during, or after, inclement weather which makes operating the railway difficult.

When the Cliff Tramway (funicular) is running (currently under refurbishment in 2026), you can ride up from the seafront to the town. In the following video, I watch the exchange of tram cars, ride down, visit the beach and watch the waves and then ride back up – please try to contain your excitement!
