The Mariners is Paul Ainsworth’s gastro pub in Rock, just a short ferry ride across the tidal Camel Estuary from Padstow. But check the tides before you book!
We booked for Sunday lunch at 3pm – any earlier and the ferry wouldn’t run from Padstow and even at this time we had to disembark onto the beach and walk to the slipway.
Downstairs is a proper pub.
We booked a table upstairs.
All the staff were friendly and professional. Prices correct as of May 2026.
A pint of Doom Bar, a reasonable £5. A carafe of tap water free.
Sunday Roast: Roast Cornish Dexter sirloin of beef, braised short rib, beef dripping roast potatoes, chargrilled hispi cabbage, Yorkshire pudding filled with beef trivet onions & red wine gravy. Plus sides of Cornish vintage cheddar cauliflower cheese, tenderstem broccoli, Cornish sea salt, olive oil, carrot, swede and nutmeg mash. £32.
As you would expect, this was a really good Sunday roast – but not perfect. The Yorkshire pudding was a little dry and the beef trivet was under the beef (where it should be for cooking) and not inside the pudding, but that was helped by asking for extra gravy.
I’ve always hated cauliflower cheese, but the Mariner’s version was the best I’ve tasted – still don’t like it though!
The tide was higher when we left and the ferry departed from the slipway. Note that the last ferry departs early evening.
If you’re visiting the area and want a Sunday roast, the Mariner’s is the place to visit. If you find yourself at the opposite end of the country, you’ll find a better Sunday roast for less at the Spa Hotel, Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
Chef Paul Ainsworth has several locations in the area. We also visited Caffè Rojano in Padstow.
