It’s been over 50 years since Rick Stein opened The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Cornwall. It remains the flagship of the group of ten restaurants.
Padstow is a small fishing village. The restaurant overlooks the tidal Camel Estuary and is easy to find.
The conservatory is cosy, but the view is more to the road than anything else. There is a roof terrace with better views, but I think that is just for drinks – you also don’t want an expensive fish stolen by the local seagulls!
Inside the restaurant is huge. The walls feature original artwork, although I didn’t recognise any of the artists.
All the staff were extremely friendly, helpful and professional. Prices correct as of May 2026.
A 500ml carafe of Stein’s Bordeaux Supérieur Rouge, La Gramondie, France 2022 £32.10. Recommended. Tap water was free.
The obvious choice is the signature menu. Four courses for £75.
Coombeshead Farm Sourdough and Deep-fried Crystal Prawns. A delicious start.
Grilled Mussels with Romesco Sauce. Lovely.
Octopus Carpaccio. Good but the mussels are the better choice from this menu course.
Cornish Cod with an Apple Velouté. This was amazing and the absolute star of the show – I guess you would expect that!
Lamb Rump with Tomato, Shallot Salad and Aioli. Good solid cooking but we wished we had chosen the Indonesian Seafood Curry.
Carrot Cake and Pistachios with a Beurre Noisette Cremeux. A lovely desert.
I chose the Cheese with Membrillo and Sourdough Crackers. I was able to select the type of cheeses I like – for example, I don’t like Brie! The star of the plate was the shavings of Tête de Moine Swiss alpine cheese.
We really enjoyed our visit to The Seafood Restaurant. It’s always a risk to meet your heroes, but Rick didn’t let us down.
